September's Meeting
Rich Byrnes

The next meeting will be held at Sisko's in Taylor on Wednesday, September 23rd. Sisko's is located on Monroe (between Telegraph and Southfield), just south of Vanborn. Their address is 5855 Monroe and their phone number is 313-278-5340. Sisko's also has a website at http://www.siskos.com/. The competition for this month is Fruit and Lambic beers. As usual, the thirsty hard-core who want dinner will start arriving around five, people will drift in for an hour or so, and by 6:00ish, we will start our meeting.

Special thanks to everyone who contributed to the success of this year's Brew-B-Que. Tony Treusch picked up all the produce and did all the cooking, Neal Petty once again ran the kid's games, Johanne Wilson ran the raffle, and many people helped solicit gifts for the raffle. Thanks to all our loyal retailers who contributed to the raffle along with several microbreweries and brewpubs. Doug Geiss secured the site and I think the site was fantastic (as well as a great bargain)! Thanks to Tony Treusch and Kathy Loftus who showed up early to help set up. David Peters showed up just in time to shuck corn and make an ice run. Tyler brought our bar and the corn boiler (nice truck, Tyler). Special thanks to Neal Petty, as well, for bringing his guitar and Ted "Tedly" Geftos for bringing his sax and providing the musical portion of the entertainment... you guys were AWESOME! The weather was perfect (as opposed to last year's inferno) except for a brief 10 minute shower and the food that everyone brought was excellent! It was a lot of fun getting together with families and sharing a Saturday afternoon. Many people brought beer to share and a great time was had by all. The format was different this year, a genuine hamburger and hotdog picnic, and I think this worked rather well. As usual, all feedback, criticisms and suggestions are welcome. If I forgot to thank anyone, consider yourself thanked. The event could not have run smoothly without everyone's help.

Last months meeting at Sisco's went very well for a new location and unless I hear a lot of other suggestions or severe criticisms I believe we have found a new home!

Dragonmead brewery is starting a new "club" at their establishment. On the first Tuesday of every month they will host a meeting where they will discuss a style of beer and do a tasting of that style. The club is a new concept and still under much development. Originally, they thought they would discuss a style and the next month every homebrewer that brewed that style would bring in a sample for evaluation. The brewer of the winning beer of the night would come back to the brewery and brew that beer with the brewers on their pilot system. The brewer would get to keep 5 gallons and the brewery would put the other 5 gallons out in the tasting room for customer evaluation. It was deemed too close to discuss a style and have it ready for tasting in one month. The only thing in question will be the timing of the style discussions and the judging. October's style for judging will be brown ales and November's style will be Abbey Ales (possibly Belgian ales in general, I'll have to double check). We got a tour of the brewery and enjoyed many fine samples of different beers in the tap room from Scottish Export to Belgian Trippel to English mild. Dragonmead is an outstanding new microbrewery that is sure to rise to fame. They can be reached at 810-776-9428 for more information. They are located on the I-696 service drive at 14600 Eleven Mile Rd., just past Bunert St. (exit 26 off of East bound I-696 on the south side of the street.)

Joint F.O.R.D./A.A.B.G. Meeting
Chris Frey

After a false start last month, I got it right this month. I am formally inviting the members of the F.O.R.D. club to join the Ann Arbor Brewers Guild (AABG) meeting at my house this coming Friday, October 9th. This meeting will be in addition to our regularly scheduled meeting on 10/27.

I joined the A.A.B.G. earlier this year because I found that I had the appetite for more than one meeting a month and also because they meet a lot closer to my new home.

The meeting starts at 7:30 and goes until 11:30ish. I would like people to RSVP me so that I have some idea of what numbers I might be looking at. You can contact me on profs: cfrey, e-mail: crispy275@aol.com, or call me at work: 313-337-1642, or at home: 734-944-6618.

My address is 275 S. Ann Arbor Road, Saline, MI. If you are coming from the east, take I-94 towards Ann Arbor. A few miles before you get to A2, take the Rt. 12 (Saline) exit heading west. Go approx. 6 miles until you are in downtown Saline. Take a left onto S. Ann Arbor Road and go approx. 1 mile to the first light (down the hill, up the hill). My house is on the left, Crestwood St. (Rd? Ave?) is on the right. If parking gets tight, park on Crestwood. Bring beer!

Big Brew # 2 - 10/10/98

And if that isn't enough, I am inviting all interested brewers to join me the next day (Saturday, October 10th) to participate in Big Brew # 2. Anyone who feels like brewing with a bunch of other brewers is welcome to join in and bring their systems to my home. Burners will crank up around 9:00, the grill will crank up around 12:00. I am asking anyone who plans to participate to bring a side dish and let me know what it is so we don't have 11 Mexican bean dips! I will have burgers and dogs, so we won't starve! Rain or shine, we have plenty of covered space to brew to our hearts content. There will also be members of the A.A.B.G. there, so come prepared to meet some real nice people! And bring beer!

Come to think of it, why not plan to come the night before, meet the people, leave your brew system and side dish and plan to make it a 24 hour submersion in beer! RSVP, directions, same as the meeting!
