Last Months Meeting
Well, last months meeting was one of the more interesting meetings we have had in a long time. First off we didn't meet in our regular room, due to a scheduling conflict. We did however have a large table up against the wall just outside the conference room which was fine (except for the really loud group next to us!) There was a total of 16 people at one point during the evening, which I can guarantee you is a great attendance for a summertime meeting in any club. I brought Tom Herron with me, which was his first appearance in many months (since his hip surgery). There wasn't any real club business to cover, summer being kind of slow and all, but we did manage to finalize some plans for the beer-b-cue (more later on that event!) We are still however looking for a logo, it would be nice if we could come up with a logo before our 1 year anniversary, several people have mentioned some nice ideas, but I need to see them on paper, just a simple sketch will do, we will have an artist do the rendering.
Next Meeting is Aug 24
The Ye Olde Brew News is the monthly publication of the Fermental Order of Renaissance Draughtsman, otherwise known as the Fermentals. The club meets once a month on the 4th Wednesday at 6:00 at the Traffic Jam & Snug brewpub in Detroit, unless a special meeting is to be held elsewhere. Our fiscal year begins Jan 1st and dues are set at $25 a year for new members, and $15 a year there after, members joining after July 1st pay $17.50 for the 1st year. Joint memberships (same household only) are $40 the first year, and $20 there after.

PIG ROAST REVIEW
For those of you who attended, you know what I'm
talking about, for those of you unable to attend, you will have
to wait until next year to experience "the pig", but
I will sum up the event here anyway.
Planning started years ago (honest, I've always wanted
to do a pig roast, this is my first), actual plans started back
in early spring when we conceptualized the event and finally settled
upon a date. The week prior to the event we started getting Tom's
yard ready, Tom even had a new patio poured just for the occasion
(what a guy Tom!) , two days before Neal Petty, Doug Lecureaux
and myself moved the pig roaster from the K of C hall to Toms
home (that thing was heavy!) we got our first peek at the pig
that night too. The day before the roast Tom's cousin came over
and set up the volleyball net and helped us get the tarp set up,
that was a big relief. at 6:30 am, on Saturday Doug came over
and fired the pig up, from that point on, more coals had to be
added every hour, Neal Petty and I took turns doing that. The
pig was done by about noon and had to cool down for a couple of
hours at that point. People started filtering in about 1:00 and
the party really got going by about 5:00 when most everyone was
there and the volleyball and horse shoe games got underway. The
50/50 drawing for the library fund got underway around 8:00, several
prizes were given away before the big prize. Congratulations to
Doug Lecureaux for winning the 50/50, a total of $78 worth of
tickets were sold so Doug Geiss now has $38 to spend on the library,
he is taking suggestions for books at this point. Later in the
evening we fired up the bonfire pit and Neal fired up his guitar,
what a combination. The sing along lasted for a couple of hours.
The last few people left at about midnight and a good time was
had by all. I'm completely open to suggestions for next years
event, it's not too early to start thinking about it.
LOST AND FOUND
Well, the party was a success but there were some
minor mishaps, Tom & Tammy have discovered some serving utensils
missing, please check your kitchens for any of the following items,
a spaghetti fork (who brought the spaghetti salad?), a meat fork,
a large set of tongs (last seen pulling corn out), and most importantly
a trident cake knife that was part of a set given to Tom &
Tammy as a wedding gift. I'm sure these items just got packed
up at the end of the night, no harm done just bring them back
please.
THANK YOU
I would like to use this space to thank all the people(s)
that had a hand in making the pig roast a reality. My biggest
thanks goes to Tom & Tammy Herron for the use of their home
for this event; thanks to our wonderful chef, Doug Lecureaux for
all the hard work he put into this; Tom's cousin Scott for the
use of his volleyball net and helping us get the yard ready; Neal
Petty for helping move the pig roaster and helping Tom get ready;
Frank Depifanio for helping Tom and helping move the pig roaster
back; Tony Randazzo from Merchants Warehouse-Royal Oak for donating
a $10 gift certificate, Neal Petty for donating 2 beer signs;
Chad McDaniels and Chris Hoggarth for donating a ¼ barrel
of Detroit Mackinac Red; everyone who bought raffle tickets to
help the library fund; Neal Petty again for bringing his guitar
and entertaining us until midnight; but most of all I would like
to thank everyone who attended and gave up a beautiful Saturday
to be a part of this. (I hope I didn't miss anyone, but if I did
I apologize in advance)
SWAP/SELL/BUY
Chad Mcdaniels has 5 cornelius kegs to sell, $10
each (Pepsi or coke? I don't know)
I have a 20 LB CO2 tank for $70 and a 20 LB CO2 fire
extinguisher (Can be converted for $35 from Detroit Fire Extinguisher)
for $35.
NEW MEMBERS
Bob Rotay (not Satay, sorry) was the only new member
at last meeting, Bob is an old friend of Neals who hooked up with
Neal at the Pico brew a few weeks ago.
LOCAL NEWS
Detroit Mackinac brewery has officially gone out
of business, the actual beer however will be contract brewed by
Oldenburg Brewery in Kentucky, there may even be a possibility
of Detroit Mackinac in bottles.
Merchant of Vino is opening up a new store in Dearborn,
Merchants Warehouse is located on Michigan Ave in the heart of
downtown West Dearborn, across the street from Jacobsons. Scheduled
opening is September 15th (Thursday) with a big ribbon cutting
ceremony by mayor Mike himself. As of today, they are still looking
for a Homebrew manager. Wayne Burns was hired for the position,
but has since enrolled at the Seibold Institute in Chicago and
will most likely end up at a brewery somewhere after that. If
anyone is interested in working the beer/homebrew department,
please call Matt at 563-8700
There is a new bar opening up in Berkeley next month
called the Berkeley Front. The bar will have 30 taps and the owner
prides himself on not (NOT) carrying Strohs, Coors, millers or
Bud. Well, he will probably carry Killians and Leinenkugel, but
most taps will carry imports and craft beers. The owner is an
ex homebrewer and even has a meeting room with CO2 lines coming
out of the wall (nice touch!)
COMPETITION NEWS
Last month was the Wheat (Weizen) competition, there
were 4 entries, 2 by Lyle Doerr, 1 by Tom Herron and 1 by Chad
Mcdaniel. I don't have the results in front of me but one of Lyle's
Bavarian weizens won and will be sent to the national AHA club
only competition, congratulations Lyle. I believe Lyle has made
about 8 or 9 wheat beers.
This month's competition is the mead contest. This includes traditional meads,
cyser (apple), pyment (grapes), melomel (all other
fruit), metheglin (spiced traditional), hippocras (spiced pyment)
and braggot (malted barley and possibly hops).

MEMBER NEWS
Don't be too surprised when you start getting some
homebrew catalogs in the mail that you didn't order, I have "subscribed"
to several catalogs that will prove interesting, whether or not
you ever order supplies from a mail order firm, it's always nice
to have catalogs to see new products. I don't remember all of
them but there is William's (a personal favorite, many unique
items), Alternative Beverage & Brewhaus (both of which offer
club discounts, your catalog should include a membership #, and
a few others. for the people that keg, you will also get a catalog
from Foxx equipment and Braukunst.
I'm now a CompuServe member and have been exploring
the homebrew forums for quite a while, if anyone has any questions
for Charlie Papazian, James Spence (AHA), Cliff Tanner (Braukunst),
Dan Listermann (Listermann mfg. (i.e. Phils filler, Phil mill,
Phils sparger)) or Jack Schmindling (JS - easy masher, malt mill)
let me know and I will pass them on, all these people are quite
accessible and do answer their mail.
