Last Meeting:

Well gang, this news letter will be a little shorter than I've been doing, not to worry though, I should be back to normal next month. This has been a busy month around the house and office, plus last months meeting was one of the smallest and shortest on record. I will also be leaving for vacation this Friday (17th) so I MUST get this newsletter out right quick, hope you can forgive me. As far as last months meeting went, we had a grand total of 10 people show up including Mike Arends wife, as a guest. The meeting was very sociable as we all sat around and enjoyed some light banter and conversation about, what else, real beer. John "the Guru" Habermann was finally able to adjust his schedule to join our club, so we can look forward to talking with him more often, I call John the Guru because he is the homebrew consultant at Wine Barrel Plus, John also put together the classes taught at Wine Barrel. John is on vacation right now, but starting next month we can look forward to at least one if not two guest articles each month including a feature article highlighting a new topic each month, and perhaps a Q&A sort of column. If anyone else has a desire to do guest articles, let me know, and you are more than welcome to submit anything for review. Even though there was a very small turnout, it was still a fun meeting. Dennis brought some Death by Chocolate Porter (recipe to follow) and a delicious IPA, I brought some Mosquito Chaser Stout and if anyone else brought beer but didn't write it down on the sign in list, sorry. There was no club business last month to go over so there's none to report here. Hope everyone is enjoying their summer so far, I know I am.

Competition News:

There were only 3 entries for the Pale Ale competition, and Dennis Raney took first, someone else took second (I apologize for not having all the info, I had to take off a little early and didn't see the results) and Kerry O'Donahue took 3rd.

This months competition is the very loosely defined "light Summer beer" competition. We'll leave it up to the judges to classify this one. Next month is of course the AHA club only Wheat beer competition.

New Members:

Kerry O'Donahue joined at last months meeting, and John Habermann pledged that he would contact Sandy and make arrangements to join. We are growing by leaps and bounds people, this little club is really taking off. I would still like to see more participation in the competitions, volunteers to help judge, and just general improved attendance at all meetings, enuff said!

RECIPES:

First off, I should have explained the 2 page recipe list I included in last months newsletter, I did not write those recipes, nor do I take any credit for those recipes. Those came from an anonymous homebrew supply shop owner that posted them on Internet. I admit the recipes are sketchy, and none of them specify a yeast, but assume they are all 60 minute boils, 5 gallon recipes, have a little fun with them.

Dennis Raney's Death by Chocolate Porter/ stout.

1 LB Chocolate malt

½ LB Black Patent malt

½ lb. cara-pils

6.6 lb. M&F Light

Mash grains for 1½ hours in 1 gallon of water at 155º, sparge with 3 quarts of water @ 170º for 15 minutes.

1.5 oz. Cascade, 60 min.

1 oz Northern Brewer, 20 min.

Total boil time 80 min.

yeast=wyeast 1084 Irish

og=1.053/fg= 1.021

primary ferm=6 days

secondary ferm=14 days

I regret that I don't have Dennis's recipe for his ale last month, but it is the same recipe he passed out in March, his Abbott Ale, I will try to include it for sure in next months newsletter.

CLUB BUSINESS

Hey folks, the Beer-b-cue is fast approaching and by the end of this month, we need a count of how many people plan on attending, so we know exactly what size porker d to order, I have contacted all the Ford employees via e-mail to ask for a RSVP, but for those of you who aren't on profs, or who are not Ford employees, we must know if you plan on attending or not. Doug will also be starting the sign-up sheet for the potluck part of the evening.

Folks, I'm going to end the newsletter here so I can get it out, Have fun at the June meeting with your summer light beers, and I will see you all in July. If you haven't RSVP'd at the meeting, or on Profs, I will be calling you to find out so don't make me have to call you, just kidding!

I would like to use this space to say happy fathers day to all the dads out there, as a new father myself, I know what a special thrill it is to actually be a dad. I would like to add a copy of a poem my wife found that I keep posted over my desk, next to a picture of Kyle, my 16 month old (I actually found out I was a dad 2 years ago on Fathers Day, wow!). I don't want to exclude little girls in this space, but this poem is really targeted at little boys, no offense intended, I'll let the poem speak for itself!

To Any Little Boy's Father

There are little eyes upon you, and

they're watching night and day,

There are little ears that quickly take

in everything that you say,

There are little hands all eager to do

everything you do,

And a little boy who's dreaming of the

day he'll be like you.

You're the little fellows idol, you're

the wisest of the wise,

In his little mind, about you no

suspicions ever rise.

He believes in you devoutly, holds that

all you say and do,

He will say and do in your way, when he's

grown up, just like you.

There's a wide-eyed little fellow who

believes you're always right,

And his ears are always open and he

watches day and night,

You are setting an example every day in

all you do,

For the little boy who's waiting to grow

up and be like you.
