January 1994 Fermental Order of Renaissance Draughtsman Vol. 2 NO. 1
Well gang, for those of you that made it to the last
meeting, I owe you a big big apology. About 2:00 the morning of
the meeting, I was violently ill with the flu and couldn't make
it into work, let alone the meeting. It was late in the day when
I was able to get a hold of Mike who couldn't make it either.
At the time I didn't have any one's phone number or even a system
of communication to the club. I understand that about10 people
showed up and sat around and waited to see what was going to happen,
for those 10, I truly apologize. Many efforts are being taken
to improve such things such as communication links. I have a couple
of major announcements to make regarding the club and its leadership,
but I will wait until the meeting to make those announcements.
For those of you who can't make this months' meeting I will put
all these announcements in next month's newsletter. Since there
wasn't really a meeting last month, this will be an awfully short
newsletter. The "what's new" portion of the newsletter
is not listed because the retailers concentrate their efforts
on the Christmas rush of starter kits and basic ingredients, rather
than bringing in new products, look out next month, I have a feeling
there will be a rather large list of new products.
New Years Resolutions
Mike Preston: I will make it to the meetings and introduce myself to everyone
Rich Byrnes: I will get the newsletter out earlier and open the lines of communication
I hate to start out the new year by breaking my resolution
in the first month, but my computer was shot all week. I had a
new hard drive put in which was an extremely difficult instillation,
which then blew my power supply. After that was fixed I had upgraded
from MS Word 2.0 to MS Word 6.0 which seemed to be working just
great when I started having severe hard drive problems all weekend.
Needless to say, it is now Sunday night and I'm just now able
to start the newsletter, keep in mind folks, I don't have a PC
at work so my home computer is the only one I can do this on.
I hate to keep making excuses but I think I will be ok on getting
the Brew News out on a more timely basis. If any one has ANY
suggestions for the Brew News, whether it be a name change,
articles or features you would like to see, or any anything, please
let me know at the meeting or in private if you want. Someone
suggested recipes in the newsletter, so I will start asking people
to share some of their favorite recipes with me and I will try
to throw in a couple of food recipes each month as well. Did anyone
make those cheese dips from last month, I did and it turned out
excellent using a porter. Feel free to fax or mail me any favorite
recipes you have and are willing to share and you will be given
full credit in the newsletter.
I would like someone to volunteer to organize the
competitions for each month. We will come up with a schedule for
the year that includes several AHA sanctioned competitions, and
the rest are just for us. This person will make sure we have prizes
when appropriate, oversee the judging each month and whatever
else needs to be done in that area. I would like to see more club
members take an active role in the club events rather than be
an observer at each meeting. This would be an excellent position
for anyone interested in learning about the AHA judging procedures.
You wouldn't be thrown in this with no help either, there are
experienced people that would be willing to help out. Please keep
in mind this is a volunteer position I'm asking for. I need help
guys, I can't keep doing everything myself.
Upcoming Competitions
Since we didn't formally meet last month, the Christmas
beer competition is still on for January, for those of you who
still have some left. I announced in last month's newsletter that
there would be an ale competition in January for an AHA club only
competition, well, the deadline was last week. I didn't see the
date the first time I read it. There is a Bock competition in
March for AHA so we will have our Bock competition in February.
As far as March goes, we will decide that at the meeting
Meeting Information
I need to review the meeting room procedures due
to the large number of new people getting this newsletter. There
is no formal charge for the meeting room, we are asked however,
to cover at least a $40 tip to the waitress or waiter in our room
that night. This gets split equally, regardless of your bill.
If only 10 people show up to a meeting, each person owes $4. Apparently
in December a couple of people left early and a few people were
stuck paying their tab. If this describes you, please see me at
the meeting and I will let you know who to pay back. This is a
good place to meet, it's the only place that lets us bring in
our beer. For now, plan on paying your share each meeting unless
someone comes up with a better idea
Club Stuff
Well, we are still needing a logo, once we get this
done we can do T-shirts or mugs or whatever floats your foam,
as long as we can agree on it. I will ask someone to assume the
role of T-shirt master once we get a logo and check out T-shirt
prices and artwork prices, if you know someone in the biz, all
the better.
I don't know our account balance off hand, but I
will make that information public at the beginning of each meeting.
We have spent very little out of club funds so far, basically
we bought a couple of prizes for competitions, I am reimbursed
for newsletter expenses (25 cents each) but we will have a complete
report at the meeting (as long as Mike is there)
