This month's competition style is ciders BJCP Category 27 and 28.

I have put together a tentative schedule for beer competitions. This continues through to Jun-07, and includes all national entry competitions. I tried to select category that would present a challenge rather than make it open competition every off month. This is not written in stone, and I am open to suggestions.

F.O.R.D. Pub Crawl

Valerie & Krzysztof Zaryczny

We will be visiting 5 breweries along the I-696 corridor starting and ending in Royal Oak. Transportation will be via carpool if meeting at 2:00 (only 2 of the breweries require driving), but feel free to join us for any part of our journey. Some people will probably hang out in Royal Oak after the Pub Crawl ends as well.

We are working on the details of possibly having a tour or some other deal at a few of the breweries. It would really help us to know at the beginning of that week how many people are coming. Please reply to this email by Monday November 6th if you plan to attend, or you can call Valerie at 313-400-1327.

We are hoping for a great turn out to this event! It is an inexpensive, low commitment way to hang out with our fun group before the craziness of the holidays sets in.

Volunteer Brews requested for meeting on October 24th

Chris Frey

A few of you attended last month's AABG meeting - for those of you who did not attend, Craig and Jerry from Brewbubbas.com visited, taped some interviews and will post some of the club meeting at their website. Check out their site at Brewbubbas.com - they have posted the 2005 NHC Belgian Ale Yeast experiment notes there as well.

As you can tell from the note below, they are asking for local clubs to compete for the best homebrew club brew in Michigan. I will be taking entries at our next meeting, so if you would like your brew to be considered, bring one to the next meeting - I will collect these and hook up with the bubbas at their earliest convenience.

Sincerely,
Chris Frey

Dear AABG and FORD members,

I would like to thank all of you for your hospitality and cooperation. I am close to posting the video taken last month and would like to thank you for being so prompt in replying via e-mail with some questions I had.

Regarding the different brews we're asking you to provide, we are in the works of coming up with a very special prize for the beer that we feel is the best for the year. We will take the Top 10 and arrange for a few BJCP judges to decide on a 'best of show.' The winner of the Best of Show will not be disappointed! (You'll need to stay tuned as our plans become finalized.)

Please feel free to listen to our first two podcast. You guys are mentioned in both. (You can type in "Brew Bubbas" in the upper-right window in the iTunes Music Store and subscribe to our brewcasts.

Thanks again,
Craig Belanger

2005 NHC Belgian Ale Yeast Experiment Notes (Same Wort /Different Yeasts)

Chris Frey

Back in 2005, I gave a presentation (with a ton of help from many people) on the radically different flavors various yeasts provide on the same wort. Building from the presentation we did in Chicago in 2003, we added a number of data points and controls, and had the good fortune to have Drangonmead in Warren, Michigan, donate 93 gallons of their gold-medal Final Absolution Belgian Triple (http://www.beertown.org/events/wbc/winners_list/winners_2006.html) for the base wort. We then fermented with 18 unique yeasts strains.

Many people have contacted me for the notes from the presentation. After burning more CDs than I really wanted to, I have had another serendipitous encounter with some other beer fanatics, Craig and Jerry, who have started a website; www.brewbubbas.com . They have graciously hosted the entire presentation, along with 18x3 horizontal/vertical tasting notes. We had BJCPs taste the brews after 7 weeks fermenting in May, 2005; by a couple of hundred eager volunteers at the June, 2005 NHC and then in July by my homebrew club members at F.O.R.D.

There is a lot of info here for people looking for yeast subtleties. They also have a recent podcast interview I had with them recently, along with other good, fun info – some regional, some national. Take a look if you get a chance, and feel free to ask me any questions you might have after reviewing the notes!
