Message from the President

Mike Krawczak

I would like to thank everyone who attended the March meeting, Rex's presentation was very informative and well received by all who attended. I am trying to assemble an outline of his presentation from the notes I had taken. If anyone else took notes please forward them to me so that I may compare/add as necessary.

Our April meeting schedule of events is:

Calendar Of Events Note:

I will not be attending the April meeting because my little league baseball team is playing their first game on Tuesday evening.

Out with the old - In with the new

For years the club has benefited from the work of Tyler Barber, our club's long suffering Equipment manager. One of the lasting items that he has been responsible was the construction of the club's 12 tap bar (coke or Pepsi). This bar has served the club well over the years, even making appearances in Livonia (2000) and Chicago (2003) National Homebrew Conventions, hanging out in the Club Only rooms, serving up the remains of the 2003 Belgian Ale Experiment and serving multiple clubs in Livonia. It has also been prominently displayed (and used) to great effect at each of the last half dozen National Homebrew Day celebrations at my humble abode. With the torch passing, the original club bar needs a new home, as construction at the Barr House Brewery requires the space it currently occupies. If you would like to be the "equipment manager" for this still very usable bar, contact me and we can discuss.

Several years ago, when Tyler was hauling the bar from his home to mine in the back of his pick-up, I challenged him to consider making a "portable" club bar, one that would not require the services of his pick-up every time it needed to travel. Well, Tyler mulled it over in his mind and eventually decided to take up my challenge. It started with the idea that it had to be able to be portable, have multiple taps and be a work that he would be proud of. Tyler put out a call for unique bottle caps, purchased and assembled what is truly a work of art. Festooned with hundreds of beer caps locked into a Lucite top, plumbed with steel conduits and finished off in what can only be called a handsome finish, Tyler will bring the new "portable" club bar for display at this month's meeting, and demonstrate the appropriate set-up and tear down of the bar for members usage.

Call for help with the Michigan State Fair Homebrew competition.

Phil Kitkowski recently held the first meeting of 2006 Michigan State Fair Homebrew Competition volunteers to discuss this hallowed annual event. While the clubs have always provided some financial support, what he really needs most is a Director of Judging for this year.

This individual needs to recruit and coordinate the 50+ judges and 15+ stewards required to pull this together. This person will also help set up the judging site and coordinate making sure that no one judges a flight they are in, that novices go with experienced judges, etc. This person will also work with other volunteers to make sure we have cups, forms, score sheets, pencils, and all of the other stuff. Phil will have most of the necessary stuff like pencils, staplers, tablecloths, and can handle some of the copying. If no other venue becomes available, I have volunteered my home for the judging site, so that can be one less item to worry about. Also, I believe Phil has information on previous judges who have worked this event - a great deal of them stay consistent from year to year.

The ideal person is organized and computer literate, (and checks e-mail regularly!). Ideally, they also know many of the judges in the area and is a member of one or more clubs. This can also be worth 2-3 BJCP exp points to whoever does it.

While I am sure Phil could also use additional volunteers for judging and stewarding, this critical position needs a competent individual to step up and offer their assistance. Phil can be reached at: msf.homebrew@gmail.com.
